The study authors found that almost 78 % of individuals acting on behalf of patients in intensive care said that religion or spirituality was fairly or extremely important to them. Yet their beliefs came up in mere 40 out of nearly 250 family conferences with doctors. In 26 of those 40 situations, the patient’s family member brought up the topic first.
